Truth and Deadma

When the Gospel of today (Mark 12:13-17) comes around, the usual quote people use is: ‘Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.’ It is an oft used quote also for people to push the separation of Church and state. Or in the minds of pro-death / pro-abortion people: when you enter politics, leave your faith at the door. Not that our whole Constitution is based on faith. Human rights are based on the ten commandments. Without faith, our whole government will crumble. Just look at the communist countries that are left.

But anyway, that’s not my point. I was particularly struck by a different verse this time.

we know that you are a truthful man and that you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion.

At first glance, it seems arrogant and combative. That we should not be concerned by anyone’s opinion. I mean, who would do that? Especially in this day and age of social media – where everyone has an opinion. And everyone speaks that opinion (is the adage “There are no stupid questions” still applicable in this day and age?).

But, it IS true. If you speak the truth, then what are others’ opinions? The truth is solid. The truth is rock. The truth is foundation. And if you speak the truth, then opinions against it will fall and shatter to the ground. Jesus did not mention those words above. But he was the one being referred to. I know that He listened to all sorts of opinions. But, He never wavered in His proclamation of the truth.

I always say that you need some amount of deadma (slang for being apathetic to other people’s opinion of you) to get through in life. And now, I know that it is true…. as long as you live in the truth.
